A Good Term to Know (Thanks to Mr. W.)

The Hanseatic League was a powerful economic union in Northern Europe around the 15th that wasn't an entity so much as a brotherhood of cities and towns. Its fall around the 16th century was attributed to rising national power, and thereby allegiances that previously had fallen with the Hanseatic league turned to people's respective countries.
