Weekend Reminder

Team AP Euro,

As I reminded you in class today, remember the big picture: we are 3/4 of the way through the class and it is time to be thinking about review. As we encounter more familiar material, be using some of your extra time to begin the review process; go back and study some of the older units. If you have not yet picked up a review book, borrow or purchase one.

Also, since this week's assignments were delayed because of my absence, this new unit on WWI is also delayed. Note the reading, outline, test schedule on the previous post. Your first reading assignment for WWI is due Monday.

Prepping for the Imperialism Test

Team AP Euro,

I hope your Feb. week went well.

Because of the odd week and because I am gone at a conference (Monday-Wednesday), I have decided to mix up the plan a little bit. We are going to push back our testing a day to give you time on today to collaboratively study and prepare for the FRQ (Tuesday) and MCQ (Wednesday).

What I suggest for today:
  • Go over your study packets and be sure you know all of the elements therein
  • Talk through the early blog post (see below) about causes, critics, responses, and organization
  • (As time permits) Read through the poems posted on Drive (White/Brown/Black Man’s Burden) and discuss

Note the following resources to help you in this process:

Imperialism Causes, Critics, Responses, and Organization (in brief)

Here are some things to think through and discuss:

Causes of Imperialism:

Political and Diplomatic - prestige, ports, national security, military power, colonial nationalism (Treitschke)

Altruistic - Kipling, medicine, education, democracy, Christianity, increased standard of living, end to barbaric practices

Ideological - Social Darwinism

Domestic - success means increased nationalism, distraction from domestic issues, more jobs, cheaper goods, yellow journalism

Special Interest Groups - shipbuilders to humanitarians to military officers to missionaries to settlers to colonial officials

Economic - driven by mercantilism, needed more raw materials and markets

Technological - now they could!, Maxim gun, quinine, steamship, telegraph

Critics

Hobson's Imperialism -
 - Economic argument (failed) - Marxist critique of capitalism
 - Moral argument (successful) - blatant hypocrisy

Labouchere's "Brown Man's Burden"
 - Imperialism as racist, exploitive, and brutal

Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness
 - Corrupting influence of Imperialism

Response by the Imperialized

Resistors - violent resistance (often a bloody failure)

Traditionalists - willing to accept foreign domination if they can preserve native culture

Westernizers/Modernists - adopted western ways (economics, politics, and/or military)

Conformers - tolerate and don't see a great change from their own rulers (vast majority of people)

Organization

Colony - direct rule

Protectorate - indirect rule

Sphere of Influence - economic domination

Weekend Reminder

Team Euro,

This weekend you have an essay to write. A DBQ on nationalism. See Drive.

This will be your last take home DBQ. Therefore, I encourage you to wean yourself off of using too much time. Practice writing this with 15 minutes of planned reading and note taking, and then 45 minutes of essay writing. You may go over this amount of time mildly, but do not stretch it too much because you need prepare yourself for writing a DBQ within an hour.

Some things to note:

  • There are 12 docs in this DBQ. Use at least ten
  • Attempt at least five POVs
  • Underline your thesis (check to be sure your thesis directly and completely addresses the prompt)
  • List your docs and POVs at the end of your DBQ
